Ahead of the 12th All-Africa Students Union elective Congress scheduled for the 19th to 24th December 2016 in Gaborone, Botswana, one of the topical issues that will take center stage at the congress will be the suspension of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) from the activities of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU).
AASU suspended NANS in accordance with Article VI of the union’s constitution. The Union’s executive committee decided to suspend the National Association of Nigeria Students for continually dragging AASU’s name to disrepute . The disciplinary measure comes as a result of the activities of NANS in awarding, attempting to award or involvement in awarding the some unsuspecting prominent Nigerians falsely in the name of AASU.
These personalities include, Bode George, Chief George Iyobosa Edebiri, Prof. Olusegun Adewoye, Dr. Margaret Ladipo, Dr. Ado Muhammad, Barrister Simon Yakubu Arabo, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Dr(Mrs..)Blessing Ijioma amongst others in the name of AASU.
When Radio Univers contacted President of the Nigerian Students Association in the Accra Institute of Technology and an executive member of NANS, Chigozie Ifeanyichukwu Alex, he stated categorically that NANS had not received any letter of suspension from AASU.
‘When I heard it I was actually surprised because clearly in Ghana we’ve not heard that our National body in Nigeria has been suspended by AASU.’
Chigozie Ifeanyichukwu Alex further stated that he crosschecked from the national body of NANS in Nigeria and it was evident that NANS had not received any letter of suspension from AASU.
‘This morning I got the direct confirmation from the National Vice President….He confirmed that there is nothing as such. The National Association of Nigerian Students is not on any suspension.’
According to the executive member of NANS, Chigozie Ifeanyichukwu Alex, NANS is fully functioning and urged members of the Association to ignore the said rumors of suspension.
