Anemia could simply mean the reduction in the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. The causes of anemia can be grouped into two: reduction in production red blood cells and hemorrhage (bleeding).
In hemorrhage (bleeding), the loss of blood from the body especially when adolescent females menstruate. Also, hemolytic is also another cause of anemia, this occurs when the red blood cells die prematurely.
Symptoms of anemia includes, paleness which can lead to jaundice, constant fatigue, dizziness, palpitation and fainting
In an interview on Radio Univers Good Health show, health educator and Chief Executive Officer of Quik Medical Consult, Mr. Benson Owusu Atuahene has said that pregnant women should make the antenatal clinic their friend, by visiting regularly.
According to him, adolescent girls should make it a point to take in folic acid daily in order to maintain their hemoglobin level.
He added that some children can be born anemic when both parents are sickle cell. Another type of anemia, pernicious anemia which is the appearance of grey hair at a tender age in children can also be inherited.
Mr. Benson Owusu Atuahene further added that malaria and anemia are inter-related.
He advised that malaria drugs should never be taken with blood tonic because malaria medication inhibits the absorption of iron.
Anemia he said can be prevented. In order to prevent anemia, one must drink lot of water, intake of supplements such as folic acid and vitamin 12, consumption of green vegetables such as coco yam leaves, cabbage etc.
