Public Relations Officer for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Mrs. Agnes Teye Cudjoe has debunked claims that her outfit has withheld West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results of students who still have outstanding debts yet to be settled to their schools.
This comes after a press release from the Coalition For Youth Development (COYDEV) claiming that WAEC has withheld the results of candidates because they still have debts to pay at their various schools.
According to Executive Coordinator of COYDEV, Mr. Mensah Thompson WAEC is only contracted to conduct examinations and release results to students, an obligation they have to students after paying for the examination registration fees. Hence the council has no basis for blocking the results of students who have failed to settle debts at their various schools.
“There is an implied agreement. WAEC’s responsibility is to mark these exams and release my results for me. Now if I owe fees to my school WAEC does to have the right to block my results because I owe school fees to my school”- he said.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive on Friday, Mrs. Agnes Teye Cudjoe explained that WAEC has an obligation to the school and not the individual students. This is because the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) requires that candidates must register through their Senior High Schools and not individually as in the case of the NOV/DEC examinations. She added that the situation makes WAEC obliged to send hard copies of all results to the various Senior High Schools which her outfit has settled.
“It is not a private candidate exam; it is a school candidate exam so whatever it is we channel it to the schools. We do not withhold the results on our own. We do that on request from the Ghana Education Service (GES)”-she said.
According to her, the release of online results is only an initiative taken by the council to allow anxious candidates access their results before going for a copy of it from their schools thus per the directive from GES, online results will be withheld from students who have debts to settle yet their results has been sent to their various schools for them gain access to it. It is at the school level that they will be made to settle their debts before their results will be handed over to them.
“All we are asking candidates who owe is to go to your school for your results. We have not done anything wrong. When you owe the school will tell you ‘pay and then I’ll give you your results’”- she added.
Mrs. Teye Cudjoe nonetheless revealed that only results released online will be forwarded to the various universities for processing of applications thus advised students to make due their debts to boost their chances of gaining admission to their preferred tertiary institution.
