Kente; Ghana’s Only Impression Left On The World in Rio – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The 2016 summer Olympics witnessed its opening ceremony on Friday, August 5 2016 in the Maracanã stadium, Rio de Janeiro. The beauty of the opening ceremony saw nations hoist their flags and parade their athletes.

Team Ghana was also present in the lovely kente clothing with sprinter Flings Owusu Agyapong hoisting the flag of Ghana. But that is where it all ended for the nation, the display of the kente outfits.

The nation began its quest on Monday, August 8 2016 in the women’s 200m freestyle swimming event. Represented by Kaya Forson, it was the nation first time of participating in an Olympic swimming event. The 14 year-old clocked her personal best time of 2:16.02. A great result for the youngster but the nation was left with nothing as she failed to progress to the next stage.

The following day saw Ghana participate in the Women’s 63kg Judo event been represented by Hungarian born Szandra Szogedi. The Judoka was could not progress past her first round Brazilian opponent, Mariana Silva. Once again, Ghana was left with nothing.

Other days did not get any better as Abdul Omar (Men’s bantamweight boxing), John Ampomah (Men’s javelin throw), Abeiku Jackson (Men’s 50m freestyle swimming), Christian Amoah (Men’s 85kg weightlifting), Sean Safo Antwi (Men’s 100m), Emmanuel Dasor ( Men’s 200m), Alex Amankwah (Men’s 800m), Flings Owusu Agyapong(Women’s 100m), Janet Amponsah (Women’s 200m) and the 4x100m women’s relay team all failed to make an impact.

With a total of 16 athletes participating in 12 events, Ghana made no positive impact on the world at the big sports gathering in Rio de Janeiro. Is the Olympic games a ground for achieving individual personal best or to compete with other great nations for the medals?

As individuals, most of the athletes were impressive but as a country it was meant to be nothing but the display of the lovely Kente.
