President John Mahama has commended the West African Examination Council (WAEC), for conducting a leakage-free Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) this year.
Speaking at the 70th speech and prize giving day ceremony of Aburi Girls Senior Girls in the Eastern Region on Saturday, President Mahama said WAEC had risen to deal with the shameful malpractices that had beset the exams in the past.
“I’m pleased also to note that WAEC has risen to the occasion to deal with the shameful examination malpractices that have plagued examinations over the past several years. This year, I am proud to note that our BECE examinations have passed with no incident recorded,” he said.
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) was forced to cancel five BECE papers due to widespread leakage.
As part of measures to address the phenomenon the Ghana Education Service as well as the examination body adopted measures including transporting the question papers by air to the various regions and engaging the Bureau of National Investigations to protect examination papers.
The BNI officials were tasked to accompany the papers from the WAEC headquarters to the various exams centers.
About 461,013 final-year Junior High School (JHS) students from 14,267 public and private junior high schools participated in this year’s examination.
