Failed SRC aspirant of the university of Ghana, Mr. Eugene Adjei has described the action of the SRC president to swear in Mr. Gregory Aseidu as chief justice without seeking approval of the general assembly as a constitutional anarchy.
This according to him sets as a bad precedence for generations of students leaders of the nations premier university. Chapter seven article two of the students representative council constitution stipulates that the chairperson of the judicial board shall be appointed by the executive officers acting on the advice of other members of the executive committee, subject to the approval of the general assembly.
At the first general assembly meeting for the semester of the 2016/ 2017 academic year held last week; the president Ms. Esinam Afi Seade failed to get the nod of the highest decision making body and went ahead to swear Mr. Asiedu into office.
Mr. Eugene Agyei further bemoaned the decision of the speaker of the general assembly to allow such an illegality to go on without notice. he spoke in an exclusive interview with Univers news.
“The normal thing that should have been done is to consult the members of the general assembly after which the SRC presidents swears in the current chief justice then he now assumes his role after being accepted by the general assembly. however in this case the person has not been accepted by general assembly but goes ahead to swear in members of the general assembly which is in contravention with the exact stipulation of the constitution because he is not acting in capacity as the chief justice. the moment he swears them in then it means all other proceedings which proceeds subsequently becomes null and void”
Mr. Eugene Agyei further hinted of his plans to challenge the decision of the SRC president to swear into office the new chief justice without the approval of GA.
