All Ghanaian Homes To Have Internet By 2020- Deputy Minister – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The Deputy Minister for Communications, Honorable Edward Ato Sarpong has promised broadband internet in every home in the country by the year 2020.

Speaking at the Ghana Internet Governance Forum at the Kofi Annan Centre for Excellence in IT in Accra, the Deputy Minister explained that this policy is probable provided all stakeholders critically play their defined roles in that regard.

He also mentioned that measures are currently in place to ensure that the new initiative sees the light of day.

“I am happy to say some conversation is taking place to ensure that we have the right policies in place… It is an objective that hopefully will lead into some policy direction to ensure that there is broadband service in every urban home in Ghana by the year 2020” he said.

In addition, the Deputy Minister lamented the reduction in internet broadband service providers in the country in recent times. He however lauded the strides made by the communication sector in the area of voice service quality.

“If you consider that twenty-four years ago we had internet in Ghana and you compare us to countries that were at war at the time, and you fast forward twenty-four years after and come to the realization that countries that didn’t even know anything what internet was are now far ahead of you… then you sit back and wonder where we went wrong. I believe that on the side of voice, probably we got the strategy right”, he added.

The forum was on the theme “Building a strong multi-stakeholder model for a sustainable development of the Internet in Ghana”.
