The polemics surrounding the statue of India’s civil right activist erected on the University of Ghana campus has taken a different twist as the iconic-round glasses has been stolen.
The sculpture as at Monday October 4, 2016 was without the glasses raising eyebrow as to who might have carried out the act.
No one has however claimed responsibility for carrying the malicious damage on Mahatma Gandhi.
The campus security patrolling the area where the statue has been stationed told Univers news that he just reported to work today thus had not noticed the stolen glasses on Gandhi’s statue.
This is certainly not the first time such an act was taken on Gandhi’s bust as individuals who disagree with his ideologies go to the extent of defacing or totally pulling down his statues.
In October 2012; his spectacles was stolen from Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in his own country.
Also in April 2015, Gandhi’s sculpture was vandalized in Johannesburg South Africa where he lived for 20 years.
The three month old statue has generated a lots of debates with Lecturers, students and artists at the University of Ghana calling for its removal.
In an online petition, professors at the nation’s premier University cited a series of Gandhi’s own writings during his time in South Africa to illustrate his “racist identity”.
They accused Gandhi of working with the British colonial government to promote racial segregation in Africa and need not to be celebrated on African soil.
The statue was unveiled on the University of Ghana by the Indian President His Excellency Pranab Mukherjee when he visited Ghana in June this year.
