A Lecturer at the History Department of the University of Ghana, Dr. Akosua Perbi has lauded the move by the Foreign Affairs ministry to relocate the statue of the Indian icon Mahatma Gandhi from the campus of the University of Ghana.
Speaking on Radio Univers’ Campus Exclusive Show on Thursday the renowned historian stated that the statue of Mahatma Gandhi has no relevance on the university of Ghana campus.
Dr. Perbi further asserted that there are other intellectuals that have influenced the development of Ghana that should be honoured first before looking elsewhere. She suggested the ministry relocate it to the Indian embassy or premises of the foreign ministry.
“I’m very happy about this news. Historically, I don’t see the relevance of Gandhi’s statue on the Legon campus of all campuses. I think that they should send it to the foreign affairs of the Indian Embassy. Let charity begin at home. Even the Big six have not been put there then you bring Mahatma Gandhi from India”, he said.
According to the historian, in his life time Mahatma Gandhi discriminated against blacks and made racist comments against them that has been documented hence did not deserve to be honored on the University of Ghana campus. She revealed Indians in general are racist and do not respect blacks.
“This was a man who was so much against the blacks. Generally, Indians don’t respect blacks… They had a cast system which was even worse that slavery. […] They[Indians] are very racists, generally. Gandhi, we have documentary evidence to show, from his pronouncements and saw that he was like that”, the historian lamented.
The foreign affairs ministry released a statement yesterday on plans to relocate the statue. They stated the verbal attacks and recent defacement of the statue is quite unfortunate and to avoid any rift between Ghana and India the statue will be moved.
