The Vice President of Ghana, Paa Kwasi Amissah Arthur has paid a working visit to the University of Ghana Teaching Hospital to access the progress of work on the 217 million dollar health facility.
The teaching hospital is expected to provide cutting-edge medical training and research for various health professionals in Ghana. It is also expected to provide sub-specialist services in the following areas: Surgery, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Pharmacy, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics.
Others include Anaesthesia, Medical Education, Accidents and Emergency Services as well as Mortuary.
Speaking to the media after his tour of the facility, Mr. Arthur expressed satisfaction on the progress of work in spite of not meeting the completion date. According to the Vice President the facility when completed will hence health care delivery in the country and ease the pressure on the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Works on the facility is 96 percent complete and it is expected to be handed over for use by the University at the end of November 2016.
As part of the project package, a number of Ghanaian health professionals including doctors, nurses and pharmacists have undergone a short-term hands-on training at the Sheba Medical Center. They are expected to constitute a critical mass of staff to be engaged when the hospital commences operations.
Meanwhile Project Coordinator and Interim CEO of the University Of Ghana Teaching Hospital, Professor Aaron Nii Lawson has declared no strike action for workers of the hospital when it starts receiving patients early next year. He said the facility will be managed under strict international standards with medical providers working under the best conditions.
Professor Lawson further revealed that 1,403staff will be employed in the interim. A total of 2,806 staff is expected to be engaged when the Medical Centre begins full operation.
Below are the phases of the Teaching hospital; the first of its kind in the Sub-Saharan region. It also comprises of six different buildings.
Phase 1
Currently under construction will provide 650-beds when completed
The project comprises of the following facilities;
Building 1- Central Building- this building houses the Emergency, Imaging, Operating Theatre, Laboratories, Computer room and mechanical room.
Building 2– Obstretics and Gynaecology and Pediatrics
Building 3– Clinics and Day Surgery – this building houses the clinics day surgery and hospital administration.
Building 4 & 5 – Orthopaedic In-Patient building – This building houses internal medicine and surgical in-patient
Building 6 – Medical training – this houses medical simulation centre and staff cafeteria it will be used as a national hands-on training facility for all medical in the country
Building 7 – Modest staff accommodation
Building 8 – Maintenance / Logistics building – This houses the kitchen, laundry, housekeeping, pharmacy storage, general storage, morgue and medical rooms
External works – This comprises parking roads helipad, guard post and drainage
Phase 2
It is expected to bring in services that will compliment Phase 1 and render the hospital financially viable. This phase will provide 400-beds giving a grand total of 1000 beds.
