Sierra Leonean student, Leonard Vibbi currently studying Technology Innovation and development at Olaf College in the U.S.A has provided jobs for twenty-five women who are surviving victims of the deadly Ebola virus disease.
The young serial entrepreneur who is also a co-founder of Technativ an organization that focuses on solving everyday problems in Africa through technology, started this project during the summer vacation this year to address problems facing women in his hometown, Kanema after his one-semester study abroad program at the University of Ghana.
Speaking to Univers news, Leonard shares what inspired him to undertake this initiative.
“I started this business incubator after the aftermath of the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone. I remember in December last year, the women survivors had not only lost properties, they had also lost a sense of belonging and a sense of purpose and that was really hard on me. I’d wanted to do something about it, because in every crisis being it war, disease, natural disasters, women and children are mostly affected” he said
Leonard launched a business incubator, “Wi Grow Incorporated (W2G Inc.)”, consisting of twenty-five small scale businesses to provide employment to these women in Kanema, Eastern Sierra Leone by writing a project for a ten-thousand dollar grant.
“I decided to help these women because most of them had lost the breadwinners of their homes.I thought, the best way of making these women independent is to make them economically independent so that they can fend for themselves and their family. Therefore, I wrote a project for a ten-thousand dollar grant and this grant was used to provide twenty-five small scale businesses for these women” he added
Background
In May 2014, Sierra Leone recorded a death of 2,536 people with 3,804 people getting infected with the virus. Samples taken for Lassa fever testing showed the virus has been in Sierra Leone since 2006.
