IPP Promises To Introduce Social Welfare System – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

As part of his campaign ahead of the 2016 General Elections, Mr.Kofi Akpaloo, flag bearer of the Independent People’s Party (IPP) has mentioned that his party will introduce a Social Welfare System should they win the elections.

The system would target persons below 18years and the unemployed who would be entitled to GHc600 and GHc1200 per year respectively.

According to Mr. Akpaloo, the system which would cost the nation approximately 11 billion Ghana Cedis annually would enable beneficiaries to cater for themselves as well as fund minor business ventures.

“This is to put money directly into people’s pockets to stimulate the economy … If you want to create jobs in any economy, people must have money in their pockets to buy goods and services such that, those who are selling or producing will have the confidence to do more. And that will necessitate job creation. It’s not that we want to give people money to stay home…”

Mr. Akpaloo further explained that government would earn extra income as a result of transactions made with these monies which includes extra income in the form of VAT, PAYE, Income Tax, Corporation taxes.

Addressing concerns of the tendency of the welfare system to encourage laziness, the IPP flagbearer told Univers News that, the monies would be paid on a monthly basis. Meaning, persons below 18years would receive about GHc50 a month and the unemployed, about Ghc100 monthly. These amounts are insufficient as against ones daily or monthly needs. It is just supplementary – to ease a little pressure while providing an avenue for business initiative most importantly.

Mr.Akpaloo contested in the 2012 General Elections on the ticket of IPP but lost. He hopes Ghanaians give him the mandate to man the affairs of the country come November 7, 2016.
