2016 Mcdan Open West Africa Championship day 3 had bit of everything – surprises, and some pretty intense cagey affairs and also share of surprise results, upsets in the Men’s singles and that’s probably what makes it exciting.

UPSETS!
There is something interesting and breathtaking about an underdog beating a higher ranked and/or seeded player. It all started rather early with Palm Benjamin beating former champion Jeff Bagerbasah 6-4, 6-3. One could argue that Bagerbasah didn’t get the best preparation coming into the tournament. But, having said that, you can’t take away the fact that Palm did beautifully to outhit one of the best counter attackers in tennis. Another biggest casualty of the day being the exit of the 4th seed, Bernard Armah beating by an Ivorian Kofi Qullaume.
ALMOST AN UPSET!
Gabriel Atteh took a 5-2 lead but No. 5 seed Isaac Titriku with much experience level things up and won on a tie break 7-6(1). The second set was an immensely cagey affair with both returning nearly all balls back to make the opponent play one extra shot. Titriku relied heavily on clever guise and Atteh on his approaches and volley game. At one stage, Titriku found himself at 5-0, 40-30 to stay alive in the competition. But after two hours, the Tema Based player got the job done.
EASY PASS
No.1 seed Wisdom Na-Adjrago registered a victory over Babalola Wale from Nigeria. The 2015 All Africa games gold medalist won 6-2, 6-2 to set up a quarter-finals clash with Johnpual Katanga from Togo. Other men’s singles players like Eric Tetteh Nartey , Joel Meda from Burkina Faso and Nigeria’s top ranked Moses Micheal also reached the quarter-finals stage of the competition.
