University of Ghana’s (UG) Men’s Basketball Team has emerged champions at the ongoing All Africa University Games in Johannesburg, South Africa after beating Midland State University from Zimbabwe 96-52 in the finals.
The team beat Midland 91-65 earlier in the competition after claiming another impressive win over University of Lusaka from Zambia. Having arrived in South Africa mere days before the start of the competition, UG adapted very well to the cold weather before unleashing havoc on their opponents.
UG’s latest win ranks as the highest achievement in the institution’s history and the first Ghanaian outfit to win a major international competition. Winning the African Championship climaxes the institution’s dominance in the year following wins in GUSA (Ghana Universities Sports Association) and UPAC (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) basketball competitions respectively.
The team will turn attention to a maiden three on three competition due to be staged on Friday. It has been a good day for Ghana’s representatives at the event following Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s and University of Education’s (Winneba) major scoop in other disciplines.
The 2016 All Africa University Games popularly known as FASU’s eight edition is being hosted by University of Johannesburg and Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa.
