University of Ghana students have been reacting to a newly erected statue of Indian nationalist leader Mahatma Ghandi on the University of Ghana campus.
The statue was unveiled as part of activities marking Indian President H.E Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to Ghana last month.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey in his welcome address also mentioned that the University’s ties with India have always been strong.
Prof Ernest Aryeetey also expressed gratitude to His Excellency Mr. Pranab Mukherjee and the Indian government for presenting the gift statue of Mahatma Gandhi, whom he described as an international icon according to a publication on the University of Ghana website.
However some students at the University of Ghana have taken to social media to speak about the statue which is situated behind the Balme library at the University of Ghana.
Some social media users are calling for the statue to be removed, and questioning why the statue was erected in honour of the former Indian Civil rights leader.

This has led to agitations from many students, alumni, some lecturers and ordinary Ghanaians who have expressed dissatisfaction at the situation.
Some have also labeled him a racist who did not serve in the Interest of Blacks during his stay in South Africa.
