The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) has secured a loan of Ghc35,000 to fund the Face of GIJ 2017.
In a release signed by Benjamin Avornyotse, the GIJ SRC president, it was noted that the pageant, which is the flagship women’s event on the SRC calendar had been ill-funded over the years, thereby dousing the potency of the crown. In the sense that previous winners were not paid prize monies promised them and if they were paid, the amount were just insufficient to buttress whatever projects they sought to carry out.
For this reason, the SRC in partnership with Global Ovation Limited, an events house, have decided to enhance the winner’s package as well as double the prize monies for the queens to enable them embark on their various projects. The pageant is also expected to see the performance of some of Ghana’s top artistes signed under Tigo including Sarkodie and Shatta Wale. Ultimately, plans are also being put in place to send the winner of Face of GIJ 2017 to South Africa for capacity building purposes.
Hence, the need for the Ghc35,000 loan facility from the committee’s banker, Fidelity Bank, to cater for initial costs.
According to the SRC, this colossal amount is justified by the fact that sponsors cannot be trusted to make good on their promises and with such extensive preparations underway, initial expenses must be funded at all cost. The loan will however be offset, interest inclusive, when sponsors release funds.
From the look of things, the GIJ SRC seems to have an elaborate plan to ensure that the Face of GIJ 2017 gains a lot of media attention which according to them, will facilitate its success.
Despite the ‘good’ intentions with which the GIJ SRC secured the GHC35,000 loan, some officials of the committee’s General Assembly are unhappy about the move and rumours making the rounds suggest that some of these discontent officials have since resigned.
