Provide Shuttles For Students With Disabilities- Dr. Awo Mana Asiedu – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The Coordinator of the Office of Students with special needs at the University of Ghana, Dr. Awo Mana Asiedu has called on the University management to provide a bus for students with special needs. Speaking on Campus Exclusive on Radio Univers on Wednesday, Dr. Asiedu explained that the challenges that confront students with physical disability with regards the transport system on the university campus necessitates the unit’s request for the procurement of this facility. She further asserted that authorities should adapt more innovative methods in addressing the concerns of people with special needs which will consequently ensure all-inclusiveness and equality among students.

“We need a shuttle dedicated to students with special needs because they can’t access the current shuttles. Imagine somebody in a wheelchair trying to get onto any of these shuttles, it won’t work… Elsewhere there are kneeling buses that can kneel so that a wheelchair can be pushed in. So we need some creative rethinking” she asserted.

The Lecturer further highlighted insufficient funding as a major setback that hinders the maximization of creative ideas that will give at her unit a facelift. Dr. Asiedu added that unit is bedeviled by inadequate human resource to solicit for outside funding to create a conducive environment for the students with special needs on the university campus.

‘You know we are good at talking but when it comes to action there’s always this carriot, money. Sometimes I speak with people in authority and they tell me to go raise money and that’s a bit difficult. Because I know that that’s the responsibility of the office but have we been given the resources to go raise money. Lets face it I’m a coordinator at the Office of the students with special needs but I’m also a lecturer in the theatre arts department. I have my teaching and research to do and I have this work where we need somebody to help raise money’ she added.

Isaac Marfo, a level 300 hundred student with visual impairment also fingered infrastructural inaccessibility coupled with wreckless driving on the university campus as a predominant issues facing students with special needs. He however craved the indulgence of the school’s management to make available signage at vantage points along the streets to caution drivers to protect the lives of these individuals.

“There should be sign boards which will notify those people who drive to be aware of the disabled people on campus.”

He also advocated the covering of the drainage channels in the university be covered to prevent any injuries.
