The Ghana Health Service (GHS) in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) would from today begin a deworming exercise for children in all public basic schools.
Thousands of children from the kindergarten level through to the Junior High in over 20,000 schools are expected to receive a tablet of dewormer each. Also, trained personnel are expected to administer the medicines and also help educate the pupils about the dangers of worm infestations.
Speaking to Univers news, the Deputy Programmes Manager for NTDs at the Ghana Health Service, Dr Kofi Marfo, said the deworming exercise would have enormous benefits for the health of children since it would improve their appetite and well-being.
The whole idea is to have a very vibrant society that is a society with minimal diseases. when people have worm infestations, they are weak, their immunity is down, they are prone to other infectious diseases, their cognitive function is highly compromised and that is why to give the drugs on yearly basis.
Background
UNICEF reports on human parasites shows that more than 1.3 billion people carry hookworm in their gut. Hence, there is a need for deworming children and adults
