His Excellency Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General of the United Nation, has urged Ghanaians to contribute their quota towards a peaceful elections in the November 7 polls.
According to him, Politics is too important to be left to politicians alone to handle.
Speaking the at the 12th edition of the Kronti ne Akwamu Lecture organised by the Centre for Democratic Development, the Nobel peace prize laureate underscored the importance of democracy as a system of government and called on Ghanaians to jealously guard its enviable model of democracy especially as the country head toward the polls in three months’ time.
Outlining three key pillars of democracy, He mentioned that there is the need to include all persons in the governance process as well as ensure transparency and accountability of leaders at all times.
“Democracy depends on the lively participation of organised civil societies, in political life, Politics is too Important to be left to politicians alone, we all have a role. Democracy is crucial for Africa’s Progress, Democracy always tend to look worse, than they are because the media and civil society maximize the problems where as dictatorship suppress information about their problems”
Mr. Kofi Annan has also waded into the recent debate of having social media ban on the day of election in Ghana.
Answering questions on how social media can affect the 2016 election at the 12th Kronti Ne Akwamu Lecture in Accra on Thursday, the International statesman, Kofi Annan said a ban on social media would not be worth it.
He explained that social media must be seen as a tool to bring people together to achieve a common goal.
Mr. Annan comments come on the back of intentions of the Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor, to place a ban on social media during the November polls for what he called the irresponsible use of the platform.
The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, had earlier indicated strongly that the UN would not endorse any attempts to ban social media in Ghana during elections
