The women’s commissioner of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Suraiya Gomda has reiterated calls by the rector of the institute to ban “miniskirts and shorts” to campus.
According to her, management is not out of place with this decision and that GIJ is a professional school and a noble institution for that matter so ladies should dress accordingly.
She further added that, ladies on campus should respect the presence of male lectures and their colleagues and that they should not pretend that as ladies our sense of fashion have some resounding impact on them.
“I know it is a flaw to the tenets of freedom for someone to dictate for someone on how to dress but you would also agree to disagree to the simple virtue that sometimes circumstances demands, especially when a particular negative trend is lingering”, she said.
She again noted that, as professional in the making, we must allow ourselves to be groomed by existing structures, conventions and situational laws not only for the sake of the global market but for our virtuous selves.
“We must be communicators with difference and one important ways of ensuring this, is through decent fashion”, she added.
