News making rounds, earlier this week suggests that University of Ghana students would most likely be charged over Ghc 2000 for utility bills alone effective next academic year according to the Treasurer of the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Prince Ampofo Amoah.
This sparked controversy and public debate among some students in the University of Ghana, with some students activists coming out to publicly express their displeasure. However, the University of Ghana Management is yet to come out with decision on the projected fees by the SRC.

At the core of the issue is a misunderstanding between government and the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGs), concerning a letter which was issued last year by government on the payment of utility bills. The confusion centers on the interpretation of the letter in question – whether or not students would be charged for utility bills effective next academic year.
In an exclusive interview with Univers News, NUGs President, Paa-Quecy Adu mentioned that the letter issued by government last year did not state whether students were to pay utility bills for 2015/2016 academic year or 2016/2017 academic year.
“Whether government is supposed to release a new letter or not, there has not been a change by cabinet that students should pay utility bills. Per last year’s letter, students are not supposed to pay utility bills. The status quo remains that, students are not to pay utility bills.” he said.
