Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Ghana, Professor Francis Ewusie Nunoo has acknowledged that sexual harassment against female students is a problem that exist in the academic community.
It has been an age-long rumour and in very few cases proven that some lecturers sexually harass female students who usually go to them with concerns over their results. However victims often fail to report for fear of being targeted by other lecturers as well as lack of documented evidence.
Speaking on Campus Exclusive, which was his first media interaction after his appointment, Professor Francis Nunoo revealed that issues of sexual harassment even dates back to his days as a student.
Adding that,
‘’in a large diverse environment like the University of Ghana some of these things are bound to happen’’.
The Dean of Student also blamed some victims for contributing to the harassment by seeking favours from lecturers.
‘’There might be some truth in some of them but some of them too are made up and some too are contributions of students themselves, the way they carry themselves and the way some might not learn but would want to seek favours; he added.
However,he assured students that, his office is committed to assisting girls who go through that ordeal to seek remedy.
He further revealed that, recently a lecturer at the History Department of the University of Ghana was sacked for sexual offenses and advised students to use other channels available like the Careers and Counselling Center, respective Senior Tutors, and ultimately the Sexual Harassment Committee for help in collecting evidence against the abusers.
Professor Francis Nunoo took over from Dr James Adomako as the Dean of Students Affairs last August.
