Community Health Nurses Call Off Strike – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

The Community Health Nurses of Ghana has called off their strike following a consensus reached with the Ministry of Health and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Over 13,000 nurses laid down their tools on May 31, 2016 as an expression of their displeasure after their name was changed from Community Health Nurses to Nursing Assistants.

According to the nurses, the name change belittles the actual role they play in society. In addition, efforts to further their education were being thwarted by these two authorities in question. Thus, they miss out on promotion opportunities.

In an interview with Starr FM, Madam Esther Bamfo, the National President of the Community Health Nurses said the community has called off their strike effective today, June 14, 2016.

According to her, the name change has been reversed. Consequently, they remain Community Health Nurses.

In a related development, the Ghana Health Services has eventually granted the health workers an entitlement to a study leave due after two years of service. This will allow the Community Health Nurses an avenue to further their education, thereby providing equal promotion opportunities for them as well as their colleagues in mainstream nursing.
