Prof Ernest Aryeetey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana has called for a close collaboration between the sciences and arts in a bid to curb the many problems that plague our society.
Speaking at the Malaria Symposium held at the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research at the University of Ghana on the theme “Harnessing Malaria Research in the University of Ghana Towards National Development”, Prof. Aryeetey made it known that the problems the society is facing cannot be tackled fully by scientists or those in the Arts alone but by a collaboration of both groups.
“Increasingly, the challenges that we face in the society will be dealt with more and more in an interdisciplinary manner as the sciences and the arts will blend, therefore we should be looking for teams which will do work that involve many people from diverse areas.” Prof Ayittey
According to him, can sustain our development when the people from different fields all come together to find a lasting solution to the challenges that burden our society. He was of the view that a time will come where there will be no more Physics or Biochemistry Department but a department which will comprise of diverse people with diverse areas of specialty who will be working towards a common agenda.
Furthermore, Prof. Aryeetey also used the opportunity to call on all stakeholders to play their role in ensuring that we win our fight against malaria.
The University of Ghana malaria Centre of Excellence (UGMCOE) was established in response to the University’s drive to becoming a research university. Malaria research was identified as one of the 4 key areas of research to be developed into Centres of Excellence that will clearly define the research focus of the University. The vision of the Centre is to conduct research in the country and in the sub-region that will become the centre /source of needed data for the control and elimination of malaria
