2016 Olympic Series: The Team Representing Ghana – Radio Univers 105.7 | Voice of Legon

Team Ghana will be represented by 16 athletes at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The Ghana Olympic Committee announced a Ghana’s team for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games some days back. Ghana will be represented by 16 athletes at the games, having being represented by 9 athletes at the games in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

The team is comprised of 11 track and field athletes, 1 weightlifter, 1 judoka, 2 swimmers and a boxer.

Christian Amoah will representing Ghana in weightlifting and Szandra Szogedi will be partaking in judo. In boxing, Abdul Wahid Omar will be the only Ghanaian at the games as he set his sights to achieve Ghana’s fourth medal in boxing.

Kaya Forson and 16 year old Abeiku Jackson will be the first to represent the nation in swimming at the summer games.

Abeiku is the captain of the Ghana Dolphins Swimming Club and he is currently the Ghana National record holder of men’s freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke for 50m, 100m and 200m.

Flings Owusu-Agyapong (100m), Sean Safo-Antwi (100m), Janet Amponsah (200m), Emmanuel Dasor (200m), Alex Amankwah (800m) and John Ampomah (Javelin) are the six individual qualifiers for team Ghana in athletics.

The 15th-placed women’s 4x100m relay team to be selected from Beatrice Gyaman, Dorcas Gyimah, Persis William-Mensah, Gemma Acheampong,  and Akua Obeng-Akrofi.

Ghana has a total of 4 Olympic medals; three in boxing and one in football with the most recent medal was won in the 1992 summer games in Barcelona, Spain.

The question on many minds is who will win the nation’s fifth Olympic medal?
