The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD), Alfred Quarshie has revealed that termites destroyed the Chalk that was produced by their factory the leading to the total collapse of the factory.
In an Exclusive Interview with Univers News’ Mensa Duncan, he mentioned that the society is now putting in place measures to get funds in order to revamp the factory.
According to him, several organizations and government agencies that promised to support the society have all reneged on their promises thereby making the lives of members of the society difficult.
“We had a chalk factory that runs but because we have financial problems and there were termites that destroyed the chalk and other stuff and operation even ceased and now we are looking for funds to revamp the factory… We have been promised and promised but very little comes out of it”
Mr. Alfred Quarshie however mentioned that members of the society have been beneficiaries on the district assembly common fund set up for the society by the Government.
He further expressed gratitude to the Government for sticking to its promise of increasing the fund by 3%.
Mr. Alfred Quarshie also added that the society faces a big challenge in terms of accessing their monies through the fund management committee and some District Chief Executives (DCE) who are responsible for disbursing the monies.
According to him, the bureaucratic process members of the society go through before accessing their monies was frustrating.
‘’Distributing these monies sometimes might take forever, like these releases that have come, it is possible some people will get their monies in about six months’ time although Government has already released the monies into the system, and with a lot of bureaucracy and meeting and other things and some of the people don’t get the right amount of monies they applied for”
He mentioned it can take up to six months to access the monies from the district assembly common fund meant for the society- a situation members of the Ghana society of the Physically disabled are not pleased about.
He also added that the personnel at the fund management committee sometimes hoard some of the money meant for distribution to members of the society and thereby giving out flimsy excuses to justify their actions.
He further added that when persons with Disability are earning, it will enable them to pay taxes which will also contribute to the revenue generation for the country, which will eventually lead to a time where persons with disability will not need the district common fund to survive hence the Government can channel the monies into other sectors of the economy.
